The Effects of Healthy Weight Management Program for Soldiers of a Military in Taipei City

 

Introduction

The army is one of a special community’s forms. But prevalence of obesity among soldiers during military is gradually raise. Health promotion plan for soldiers is one of the main tasks of army. This task empowers soldiers to regain, improve and maintain good physical fitness status in their daily living.

Purpose/Methods

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of health promotion programs for a group of soldiers in a military.

Methods

A one group pre- and post-test design was used in this study. The study period was last for 3 months (March 6, 2013 and June 31, 2013). We used diet, exercise and activity records to collect the data of interventions. The height, weight, body mass index and body fat were the indicators of the results of the interventions.

Results

A total of 113 soldiers participated in this study. After 3 months of the intervention (posttest) for all obese soldiers, 60 participations (53.1%) had effectively lose weight over 1 kg. The total of 154.5kg had been reduced in this period.

Conclusion

The results illustrated the method and process of the interventions has a positive impact on the body weight loss of obese soldiers. We suggest that the staff should keep implementing health promotion activity to improve the quality of life for soldiers. These results may serve as reference for further program.
